Birmingham also hosted 15 middle school students and two teacher chaperones from our Japanese sister city of Hitachi. This was the 20th time the city has hosted students from Hitachi. The students stayed with host families and visited the Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, and the McWane Center and Birmingham History Center. They were presented to the City Council by Mayor William Bell. The groups also enjoyed a hike and picnic at the Ruffner Nature Center.
The City of Birmingham will be submitting a Brownfield Grant Application to the United States Environmental Protection Agency. Traveling Alabama’s highways, we often see signs erected by the Governor’s Office or the Alabama Department of Transportation noting construction that is underway. Soon, you will begin to see Economic Development Project Sight Signs from the Mayor’s office in front of economic development projects at sites such as the new Save-A-Lot, Fair Park, and the Shannon-Waltchak Redevelopment Project.
A $361,256 Economic Stimulus Loan was recently approved for the construction of a Southside Dunkin Donuts Franchise at 2109 6th Avenue South. The proposed project will create 50 new jobs over the next three years.
Between January 1, 2010 and July 31, 2010, one thousand three hundred and ninety-eight (1,398) new business licenses were issued by the city.
The City of Birmingham will serve as a presenting sponsor for Restaurant Week to be held September 17th – 25th. A kick-off celebration is scheduled for September15th at the Hotel Highland Conference Center with Mayor William Bell as the featured speaker.

Construction continues on the Shannon-Waltchak Redevelopment Project with a mid-fall 2010 opening of new restaurants and other retail stores on Hollywood Boulevard at the intersection with Highway 280. The proposed redevelopment will create 45 new jobs.
The Office of Economic Development is pleased to announce the addition of Mr. Irenio Johnson, Project Manager. Mr. Johnson has a wealth of banking and finance knowledge and therefore will lend his support to the team in the areas of financial analysis and modeling. Further, he will also assist with business recruitment and retention efforts.

Banners and signs are being installed as part of the Woodlawn Beautification Project by the City’s Public Works Department. In addition, the Public Works Department is also redoing brick pavers and planting shrubs from the City Market to Georgia Road.
