Johnathan F. Austin
Johnathan F. Austin was appointed to his seat in December 2008 by the Birmingham City Council to ensure that District 5 constituents had a voice on the Council.
Councilor Austin is a Birmingham native who attended John Carroll Catholic High School. He has used his educational and technology training experience for both social and business entrepreneurship. He has served as Executive Director for The Center for Urban Missions, a community based organization that addresses the needs of underprivileged children and adults and focused on healthcare, education, and economic development. He was Chief Operating Officer of New City Center, another program for the underserved in Birmingham.
Before being appointed to the Council, he was elected to the Northside Community and Central City neighborhood associations. Currently, he is President and Chief Executive Officer of Fitz, a technology consulting firm. As a City Councilor, he pledges to work on initiatives that unite Birmingham, make the city more technologically friendly, open more bike lanes, improve personal health, enhance the environment and create jobs. He is also determined to motivate his peers to get more involved in public service. He has announced that he will strive to remain in office by providing quality service; thereby, establishing a solid platform on which to stand when he runs for the Council seat during the 2009 City Council elections. Councilor Austin has 3 brothers, 2 sisters, 5 nieces and 7 nephews. He is also the proud parent of an adopted dog, Zeus.
